Drowning is one of the easiest ways to die. 

I think people get more upset by the idea of it-the thought of having no air to inhale, of feeling the silken pressure of the water all around you pressing in. The horror of knowing that if you fill your lungs rather than your belly with the life giving essential element you will surely die.

But it didn’t hurt. All I remember as I was sinking that evening was a few scant seconds of sheer panic before I gave up. I held my breath for as long as I could, and THAT was the most uncomfortable part, the instinct to preserve my life by not inhaling lake water. I was aware of a thousand alarm bells going off in my head, and I thought I could hear voices shouting, but my consciousness and my inner awareness remained eerily calm, as though I had already weighed my options and surrendered to the inevitable.

With the weight around my slender ankle, I was only going to sink.
