Teaser
The flickering light cast spooky shadows over the numerous colorful tapestries hanging throughout the long hall. Most were forest scenes, where large creatures like wild dogs and wolves hunted down deer and other woodland animals. The bright crimson depicted in the artwork disturbed Durra more than the cruelty of the killings. She wondered why such a gruesome subject was on the walls of a convent.

BLOG TOUR: The Secret Brokers by Alexandrea Weis

The Secret Brokers

(Secret Brokers, #1)
Published by: Vesuvian Books
Publication date: April 7th 2020
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense, Thriller

Dallas August runs a dangerous business—an organization of elite spies for hire.
The secrets trade.
Nothing is off limits, and no price is too high.
When asked to uncover what recluse Gwen Marsh knows about a Mafia kingpin’s death, Dallas poses as a bodyguard to get close to his target, but the stubborn Asian beauty wants nothing to do with him. As the FBI and the Mafia close in, danger drives them together, but can he protect Gwen, or will Dallas be the one risking everything to discover what she is really hiding?
Dallas August is about to find out how dangerous life can be as one of the Secret Brokers.
Once you are in, there is no turning back.

EXCERPT
Dallas came alongside the sofa. “Meeting your father has given me a little more insight into you. He’s tough and made you tough, too.”
“Tough enough for a woman, my father would argue. In his eyes, I’ll never be quite good enough.”
He studied her profile, questioning why she wasn’t shouting, causing an uproar, or engaging in another war of words. He’d kept away to avoid an altercation about his reasons for being there, but as she sat on the sofa, almost appearing comfortable with him, her behavior confounded Dallas more than her brutal stubbornness.
The firelight shimmered off a bottle stuck between her crossed legs.
“Where did you get that?”
She lifted a half-full bottle of vodka. “Dad doesn’t keep liquor in the house, so I smuggled it in. I put it in my bag back at Carl’s. I remembered it when I couldn’t get to sleep.”
The reason for her mellow mood revealed, his trepidation melted away. “Can I join you?”
She waved him to the sofa, wobbling as she moved. “Go right ahead.”
He sat and became hypnotized by the firelight on the portrait. The lines and color of the subject's hands and the way her long dress draped around her ankles impressed him. It was a piece worthy of Carl’s collection.
“Is that your mother?”
She took a long swallow of the vodka and then nodded.
“It was a present from my father right after they adopted me.” She held out the bottle to him. “Do you want some?”
Dallas took the vodka, inspecting her flushed cheeks and the dots of sweat on her brow. “How long have you been down here drinking?”
She rested her head on the sofa and closed her eyes. “A while.”
He brought the bottle to his lips and took a long deep swig. The burn hit the back of his throat, and he shuddered with relief.
She turned to him. “What brought you down here, other than your usual bullshit?”
He swallowed hard, caught off guard. “My usual bullshit?”
“All that stuff you carry around like a fifty-pound weight.” Gwen waved an unsteady hand at his face. “I can see it in your eyes like a loathsome secret you can’t share with anyone. Sometimes you look just as lost as I feel.”
“You’re not lost.” He set the bottle on the floor, wanting to stay sharp. “You know where you’re going and what you want.”
Her heavy sigh rose over the snapping of the fire. “You have no idea what I’m talking about.”
He inched closer, admiring the curve of her jaw. “Explain it to me.”
She rocked her head forward, glaring at him. “Why do you care? You came to get my secret. That’s what you do—steal secrets and pass them on to the highest bidder.” She wrinkled her brow. “How do you sleep at night?”
A lock of her hair tumbled over her shoulder. He wrapped the silky curl around his finger.
“I don’t steal secrets. Whatever you think of me, I came here to protect you.”
She nodded, and her head lolled to the side. “And you’ve done that. Job over. You can go home and forget about me.”
He let go of her hair and sat back, perturbed by his constant hunger for her. It kept him from stealing the key and walking away. He hoped it died once he returned to New York.
“Forgetting you is going to be difficult.”
She rested her cheek on the sofa, tilting her head, and dissecting his face with her gaze. “I thought you hated me. I got on your nerves, frustrated the hell out of you, never listened to a word you said and—”
“Got under my skin in the process.”
He put his face closer to hers, and something broke inside him. It was like a tall wall tumbling after a great siege, and all the emotions he’d kept locked away were free.

Alexandrea Weis & Lucas Astor
(A Magnus Blackwell Novel, #3)
Published by: Vesuvian Books
Publication date: March 26th 2019
Genres: Adult, Supernatural

Lexie Arden has a loving husband, a thriving business, and consults with the New Orleans Police Dept on murder cases. Kalfu has given her everything she desires, but challengers to her authority are closing in.

Her dark secret remains hidden from everyone except Magnus. He sees the evil growing stronger, changing her, and hurting her marriage. If Lexie doesn’t rid herself of Kalfu’s influence soon, the consequences will be irreversible.

When she unexpectedly inherits a cottage in the swamp, she uncovers a library of rare books on voodoo. Their spells can reverse the dark lord’s hold and set right the balance between darkness and light. But such magic requires a great sacrifice; one Lexie isn’t willing to make.
With the shadow spirits and raging voodoo gods vying for her attention, Lexie is on the verge of losing everything—her husband, her power, Magnus, and possibly, her life.

The battle for control of the mambo’s soul is about to begin.

EXCERPT
A rush of footfalls came from the shelled road. Magnus floated toward the front of the cottage, attentive to the rumble of someone or something charging toward the house.
On the porch, he took on a defensive stance, ready to confront the intruder. A low, guttural growl came from the front yard. He frantically searched for anything that could have made such a noise. It was difficult to see, but when a cloud passed in front of the moon, the entire swamp turned pitch black.
Magnus used all his senses to discover what drew closer to the cottage. His insides rippled, and a pressure weighed on his center—an individual was there. Alive or dead, he wasn’t sure. Something was off. It was as if the being couldn’t make up its mind what it was.
I’ve never encountered this before.
The cloud passed, and the moonlight returned, sweeping over the grass. Magnus scoured the land, inspecting every knotted pine tree and shrub. A rustling came from behind some bushes at the edge of the driveway. Magnus brandished his cane, ready to face whatever approached. He could not harm any living thing, but his old human instincts died hard.
Then something darted from one side of the yard to another. It did not move like a man but an animal.
A creature, crouched on four legs, crept toward the porch. All black, it moved like a hungry predator.
It stepped into the light and fear knotted in Magnus’s center. It was big and had a broad snout.
Magnus edged closer to the railing, and the animal’s glowing yellow eyes tracked him. The large dog couldn’t have seen him. Convinced the beast had spotted something else, Magnus waited at the porch steps.
But the frightening eyes stayed locked on him.
Another passing cloud sent the entire front yard into darkness. Magnus lost the canine. He trotted down the steps, examining the yard. Seconds ticked by. When the cloud moved away and a line of moonlight crossed the yard, there was no trace of the creature.
A large black shadow leaped in front of him, sending him tumbling backward on the steps. A massive paw came down next to Magnus, shaking the boards beneath.
He came face-to-face with a huge black snout. A wet, black nose settled right under his chin and sniffed. There were traces of fresh mud on the thick, matted coat. The lips on the dog’s round snout curled back, revealing a set of sharp white fangs.
“You can see me, can’t you?”
With a powerful thrust from its hind legs, the dog jumped on the porch, sniffing the cane and keeping a wary gaze on him.
Magnus reached out to see if he picked up any other strange impressions.
The moment he got close, the black in him trembled. This was no ordinary swamp wolf. His essence would only register such a tremulous reaction if magic protected the animal—black magic.
Magnus stared into the beast’s fiery eyes, attempting to use his ability. But the creature was as impervious as the house next to him. He knew the swamps contained many mysteries—Lexie’s books included lots of legends—but this animal was real, and someone with evil intentions had created it.
Another howl came from a swath of trees not far from the house.
The dog’s ears pricked. He sniffed the wind, then crouched and growled.
Magnus reached for his cane, feeling safer with it in his hands. The dog leaped from the porch and took off across the yard.
Its speed was incredible. Magnus soon lost it in the night.
He’d encountered many entities since becoming a ghost, and none of them had unsettled him as much as the dog. It was as if the powers of the living and the dead resided in the beast, and such an abomination required a great deal of depravity to create.

Magnus waited outside the cottage, anxious for Lexie. Vulnerable because he was cut off from her. Something had changed between them. The thoughts, emotions, and even the actions of the living left impressions in his head. In the beginning, he’d only connected with Lexie; now it appeared as if every person he encountered touched him in some beguiling way.
Confounded by what was happening, he went to the green water at the swamps’ edge along the side of the house. Raindrops created ripples on the stagnant water. Their concentric circles grew, intersecting in swells, releasing voices in their wake.

Magnus waited at the slimy green bank, attempting to make sense of the strange sounds. The cries of men, women, and children rose up and overwhelmed him.

“Save us!” a woman shrieked.

“Please, help me. I want to be free,” a man’s husky voice entreated.
“Take me away from this hell,” a high-pitched wail begged.
The voices built around him, crowding his ears, imploring him to rescue their tormented souls. He had never heard such noises from anyone.

A vision of his Frannie hurtling over the cliff’s edge at Altmover Manor replayed in his head. The sound she made as she toppled to the rocks below resembled the pitiful cries of the spirits around him. Magnus closed his eyes, disgusted by the memory.

When his eyes opened, he scampered backward. In the boggy water, hundreds of bodies floated in various stages of decomposition. Arms, hands, legs, and torsos bobbed on the surface. The woman in black he’d seen with Lexie stood at the water’s edge, calling to the dead to wake from their soggy tombs.

Horrified by the agony he saw on their contorted faces, Magnus wanted to obliterate the vision by returning to his shadowy realm, but he couldn’t tear himself away. The images of body parts and broken souls held him captive as bitter waves of anger and anguish rolled off the water.

“Your master’s in danger.”

Magnus spun around.

A little girl in a long white nightgown trimmed in yellow ribbon stood next to him. Down the front, a stain of burnt red went all the way to her bare feet. She held a dirty teddy bear in her arms, but when she peered up at him, a gaping wound across her throat exposed the bone underneath.

Magnus didn’t know if he could believe the phantom before him. Spirits had never reached out to him before. This was Lexie’s realm. Why did he suddenly have her gift?

“Are you real?”

“Yes, sir. Very real, just like you.”

He knelt down beside the child. “What is your name?”

“Mattie. I died in the swamp when I was six. The mistress has enslaved my soul to do her bidding.”

He touched the nose of the teddy bear in her arms. His fingers passed through the toy. “What mistress?”

“The Lady La Fay. The one who called your master to her side.”

Magnus examined her gray skin and sunken eyes. “I don’t have a master.”

She pointed to the porch steps of the cottage. “You’re bound to the woman who went inside. She’s your master and the one who controls your fate. We are all bound to those who work the dark realm. You’ll see.”

Magnus was about to question the child when her eyes went black and rolled back into her head.

Her mouth opened, and her lips stretched, expanding painfully beyond her chin and cheeks. The gaping, black hole spread and almost split her face in two. It covered her entire face, leaving only her flowing brown hair untouched.

Alarmed, he stood up. Then the child dropped the teddy bear and held her arms out to her sides.

He searched the swamps for an escape. He found the souls in the water, their dismembered bodies rising from the surface, coming toward him. A parade of legs, arms, torsos, and heads covered with algae and muck approached his spot on the shore.

He faced the girl, her toes floating above the boggy ground.

A soulless, wretched cackle came from the blackness covering her face.
“Welcome, Magnus Blackwell,” a woman’s whiny voice echoed from the darkness. “Welcome to my world.”
