EXCERPT: BEWITCHED: BOOKS OF WONDER #1 BY KATHERINE MOORE

Welcome back to BWWP!! this week, Katherine Moore is sharing with us an excerpt from her book Bewitched: Books of Wonder #1!! So let's not keep you all waiting!!!

BEWITCHED: BOOKS OF WONDER #1

EXCERPT

From the first chapter:

Bree had just left when I got the call about my Great Aunt Helen.

My stepdaughter had taken to doing her laundry at my house instead of at the home she shared with five housemates because she knew I always cooked for the rest of the week on Sunday so I could just heat something up for dinner and not have to worry about it. She also knew I always made extra for her because that’s what mothers do. Her own mother is a fan of frozen dinners and takeout and when I married her father, Bree reacted to my limited repertoire of home-cooked meals as if a Michelin-starred chef had moved into the home.

I remember she was particularly impressed with my macaroni and cheese because she’d only ever had the bright orange kind that came from a box. She’d never had a homemade birthday cake either, and I didn’t have the heart to tell her that I cheated and used boxed cake mixes, though I always made my own frosting because frosting is the best part of a birthday cake and frosting in a can just wasn’t festive enough for me.

She was on her last dryer cycle and finishing up a huge bowl of chili before she finally got around to bringing up the topic she wanted to talk to me about.

“So, Yuri’s birthday is next week and I was thinking of taking him to that Klimt exhibit up in Seattle,” she said casually, sprinkling some more shredded cheddar over the last bit of chili in her bowl and swirling it around to melt it.

Yuri, I thought.

I’d heard a lot about Yuri lately. He was one of Bree’s housemates, and also a classmate, studying for his nursing degree like she was.

“Yuri likes art?” I asked, trying not to sound too inquisitive. As far as I could tell from the few times I’d met him, Yuri didn’t like much of anything.

“He likes all things Belle Époque,” she said. “Did you know Klimt liked cats?”

And as if on cue, Stryper appeared and rubbed his big head against Bree’s leg. She bent down so she could pet him with her left hand while she finished up her chili.

“I didn’t know that,” I said. Just about the only thing I knew about my favorite artist’s life was that he was a victim of the so-called Spanish flu. Knowing Klimt was a cat lover just made me like him all the more.

“What do you think?” she asked.

“It’s a great exhibit,” I said. Melanie and I had gone to see it right after Christmas. Walking “through” the paintings in the immersive exhibit was mesmerizing. We had seen more than one person who had apparently decided the experience would be enhanced by a little THC in their bloodstream, and Melanie expressed her regret at being fresh out of weed so she could try it that way herself.

I haven’t smoked in ages, not since college when my boyfriend gave me some that had jimson weed mixed in it and I got really sick.

I was just lucky there wasn’t paraquat on it. That could really have messed me up permanently.

“That’s what I’ve heard,” Bree said happily. “I’ll get the tickets tomorrow.”

I refrained from asking her why Yuri was so interested in the Belle Époque but I couldn’t help but think about my new friend Peyton who had lived in Paris during that Gilded Age. Bree had met Peyton a few times and found him “intriguing,” but not, thank goodness, in any way that might lead to bedroom fantasies. After all, how would you process the concept that a man who looks like he’s in his late teens is actually a vampire who your middle-aged stepmother might be fantasizing about sleeping with as well?

Bree and I share a lot but we don’t share everything.

Anyway, the call about Aunt Helen was to tell me that she had died and that I was listed as the person to contact.

That’s weird, I thought. I had never seen much of my father’s aunt when I was a child and since I’d been back in Chickadee Falls, I’d seen her exactly once. Aunt Helen was dad’s only surviving relative but they hadn’t been close and she had rebuffed all my overtures and invitations. My father must have listed me as a contact when he and mom moved to Arizona.

The voice on the phone—a young woman by the sound of it—told me that I was named Helen’s sole heir and since Helen had taken care of everything before her death, the paperwork would be minimal and the time frame would be short.

“When can you come by and pick up the keys?” the woman asked me.

“Keys?” I asked, knowing I sounded completely clueless.

“For the house and the cars,” she said.

Cars? Multiple cars?

“I’m free tomorrow,” I said, which was an understatement. My days aren’t exactly packed.

“Excellent,” she said. “I’ll meet you at the house at ten a.m.” She asked me if I needed directions and I told her I didn’t. My aunt’s house was a huge Craftsman that badly needed repainting and refurbishing and probably everyone in town knew where it was because it dominated an intersection near the town’s best grocery store.

“I’ll see you then,” I said and ended the call. I immediately dialed my best friend, knowing that even though it was late, she’d be up watching a baking show or tending to her nasty flock of peacocks. Her ex-husband had acquired the creatures as part of a get-rich quick scheme and dumped them on her at the same time he took off with his investors’ money, leaving her to deal with the Feds when they came knocking on the door of the house that had belonged to her parents once upon a time when we were girls.

Even though the peacocks were evil tempered and tended to drag their feathers through their own filth, Melanie felt bad for them and refused to sell them. They’re beautiful birds and their chicks are adorable but they screech all the time and really, how many peacock feathers can you use as decoration? Melanie uses them in the craft items she sells on Etsy but even she can’t keep up with the feather fall. She sometimes bundles a bunch and puts them out at the curb with a sign that says Free.

In some places the birds are raised for meat, but the one time I suggested the possibility of cooking one, I thought Melanie was going to throw up. She’s a more sensitive soul than I am, although just as much of a carnivore.

I often wondered if peacock would taste like duck.

CHAPTER ONE-THE CREEK BED

It was day five of what seemed would be a boring and interminable summer.

Felix and Fredericka Parker, 13 and 14 year olds born just 13 months apart (Fredericka, aka “Freddie” would never let Felix forget who was the oldest) were walking along a creek bed on their Aunt Trish’s farm. Off in the distance they could see one of her handymen, Herb, plowing a field with a tractor.

“She has over 90 acres,” they said, Felix quoted with a bitter edge to his voice, “ No one for miles, you can have fun exploring nature they said!”

“So far I think nature is having a lot more fun exploring ME!” Freddie said grumpily, swatting way what had to be the largest horsefly she’d ever seen. She’d always thought she was a nature lover, even though she and Felix had been raised as suburbanites and their entire experience had been in picnicking in well manicured parks with merry-go-rounds , or “camping” at the biggest and swankiest lodge at Big Meadows with all the amenities including room service.

“I just CAN’T,” Felix continued, kicking at pebbles as they walked along. The Summer heat in Virginia was relentless, and they could feel the sweat trickling down their necks.

Aunt Trish didn’t have indoor conditioning but since her double decker farmhouse was built into the side of a hill on one side and had ceiling fans, it remained shadowy and cool indoors. She’d suggested they take a walk and enjoy the open air and sunshine.

But the open air smelled like cow patties when they were downwind of the herd, and the Parker kids didn’t like THAT either.

“We can at least wade in the stream,” Freddie sighed, kicking off her Crocs and mincing across the

Pebbles that the creek had tossed up, “Good way to cool off !

Remember what Aunt Trish said that Granny Parker always said, “When you are cool your whole body is cool!”

EXCERPT

On one hand Rory was ecstatic, on the other hand he wondered  how far what could only be interpreted as this ‘age reversal process’  would go. Was there even a stopping point? Would she settle in at her “prime”, and have the physical health of an average 35 year old?

Or would she at some point start aging again, sliding back toward her late sixties?

It did not do any good to remind himself that it was too late now. To stop giving her the injections meant that he was condemning Miz Millie to the horrid disease that threatened to take not only what was left of her vitality but also her mind.

Parkinson’s was a damn mean disease.

He knew that he had to save her. Whatever happened, he refused to lose her. Even if the cocktail never won FDA approval, he would keep formulating it and injecting it as long as she needed it.

He’d made a promise to himself a long time ago as a boy, when she’d been widowed, that he would always protect her.

He was not about to break that promise now.

☠️☠️☠️ EXCERPT: Leviathan by William Joseph ☠️☠️☠️

Welcome back to Black Words-White Pages!! Today we are sharing an excerpt with you all!! So without further adieu, let's get started!!

LEVIATHAN
by William Joseph
Cover Artist: JM Walker from Just Write Creations

EXCERPT
CHAPTER ONE

A world on fire. It ended with a whimper, per se. Society and civilization that is. There were screams and cries but they were drowned out beneath waves of rushing hellfire.

It moved across the planet, consuming almost everything it could touch. Windows shattered, buildings fell, and cars and people melted where they sat.

Whether you believe in God and the Bible or not, this was surely similar to the story of Noah. However, rather than the world being restarted by the Almighty with water, this time, the cleansing was coming from merciless flame.

Have you ever seen the power of fire? Fire, in its wildest, untamed freedom is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is destructive. The things it can do and the things that it did do were worse than any movie, any spoken word, or any scripture could ever describe. It was something that the human mind could not fully grasp or understand except only if experiencing it first-hand themselves. Fire, moving so fast it could burn the length of an entire football field in seconds. Fire, so strong that it reduced brick homes to ash. Fire, so bright that when the sun was blacked out by its consuming smoke, it still lit up the horizon. Fire, so hot that it melted metal and took your breath away just being near.

It was Hell on Earth, but it was not how it began.

WOW, what an interesting and intriguing excerpt that is!! Hurry and purchase your copy today or read for free on KU!!

CHAPTER ONE-BOXING DAY

I am excited. My father, a tall, handsome WWII vet who returned home to land a government job is taking his old boxing gloves out of the top of the hall closet.

He tells my sister and I that he used to box in the army, and did pretty well at it. I am excited because in the post war era boxing is on TV every Friday and it looks like fun, dancing around and throwing punches as well as blocking them.

He gets down the slightly dusty boxes and proceeds to lace up the smaller of the pair on me. I feel powerful just having the leather gloves hanging from my spindly arms.

I am six years old, my younger sister Lyn is three and a half, and looks on with wide cornflower blue eyes. She is beautiful, like a seraphim, with perfect blonde corkscrew curls and dimples.

I am the plain sister, the one strangers never notice. My grandmother on my mother’s side notices this, takes me aside, and tells me not to worry because I am’ distinguished looking.’

My father has finished lacing his own gloves on, and he gives my sister a bell to ring to signal the first round as we square off in opposite corners of the living room.

My entire body thrums with excitement. This is an unprecedented special event. I  am particularly impressed by the fact that my father makes it clear that he WANTS me to take a shot at him and land some punches.

I am thinking this is very cool.

My father has taken off his shirt. He is a mechanical engineer and works on huge machines at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington D.C. He is very muscular, with well developed biceps and pecs, and he looks excited too as he gives my sister a nod to ring the bell for the first round.

I run to the center, swinging haphazardly for all I am worth. My father laughs and easily blocks my punches. I laugh too.

And then he moves in more closely and starts punching me, and I stop laughing.

His first punch catches me in the jaw and knocks my head back. I am startled, and drop my gloves so that his next punch also lands cleanly on my forehead.

I feel dizzy. He doesn’t stop but begins punching me in the chest and stomach. The stomach punch knocks the breath out of me, and I fall backwards on my rear end on the carpet.

I hear my sister scream as I shake my head. Just like in the cartoons, I think I see rotating circles with birdies flying around. I look up through my disoriented haze and see that my sister has jumped up on my father’s back, and she is still screaming.

“STOP! STOP DADDY!YOU’RE KILLING HER!”

My father looks irritated. He is sweating and breathing very heavily. With a disgusted look on his face, he jerks me to my feet and removes my gloves, and as he does that he looks me in the eye.

“Remember this,” he says, ”Remember that you better always do as I say because you can never beat me. Do you understand me Trish?”

I nod, humiliated. I never landed one punch. I believe him.

WOW, that a powerful excerpt and has made me curious to read more!! Let us know in the comments about how excited you are for this release!! It releases on 11.19.2020!!

EXCERPT

The three Fairchild Witch triplets, Olivia, Esme and Agatha were huddled together in Aggie’s room, sitting on her giant four poster bed and all staring at the crystal orb commanding their rapt attention.

“I SWORE I would never do this again,” Esme said in a slightly peeved tone, “You remember what happened LAST time, don’t you?”

“HUSH!” Olivia commanded, staring at the prismatic light dancing in the center of the crystal that appeared to be growing larger, “Aggie was in charge last time! This time I am! No mess ups, I promise!”

“Not to mention that Morphic Corporeal Magic is the hardest discipline in Spell Casting,” Aggie reminded her mildly, refusing to take offense, “With the possible exception of Global Volcanic Eruptions and Pandemics! I just let the prism get too big before I started casting! And we got you back to normal in no time!’

“ANY TIME when you are sitting there with two boobs so HUGE you’d need a wheelbarrow to carry them in is too much time entirely!” Esme fussed.

“Well, now we know better,” Olivia said in a soothing voice, “And so we will DO better.”

“Who wants to go first?”

Esme sighed, ”I will! But I’m NOT going for the full Dolly Parton or even Porn Star-I just want a D cup. Nice and round if you please, like hot air balloons!”

“You got it!” Olivia told her. Whipping out her wand she spoke a short incantation as she pointed the tip toward the prism captured in the crystal.

Esme gave a startled sound as the front of her tank top seemed to fill out instantaneously.

“OH, I FLOVE THEM!” she shrieked, grabbing a newly enhanced breast in each hand, “But do you think they’re too much?”

“ You mean will they attract attention? The WRONG kind, from the opposite sex?…Oh Gee I HOPE so!” Olivia said, giggling, “I mean isn’t that the POINT?”

“Okay now me, ME!” Aggie said.

Olivia’s lovely face took on a look of rapt attention as she again focused on the revolving prism captured within the crystal orb.

“LOVELY PRISM ARTISROUCHE

GRANT MY SISTER HER FLESHLY WISH”

Aggie gasped involuntarily as her breasts exploded into DD cups and the bra she was wearing ripped asunder in the middle. When the material in the blouse she was wearing made a stretching sound she quickly flung it off over her head and gazed down stupefied at her new bosoms.

Olivia was horrified, and waited for Aggie, who was frozen motionless staring at her new acquisitions with eyes like saucers, to start screaming.

Instead she began giggling, covering her breasts with her arms as she went off into gales of laughter.

“OH MY GOD LOOK AT THESE!” she said,” WOW! JUST WHAT I WANTED ! I always wondered what it would be like to have hooters like these! Thanks Sissy, I FLOVE them!”

Olivia looked over at Esme , who also had a look of surprise on her face.

“Is THAT what you really wanted?” she questioned Agatha, “I mean they are VERY noticeable! If Witchcraft doesn’t work out for you, you can always try to break into the adult entertainment industry! But…are you sure you didn’t want them a teensy bit, er, less outstanding?”

“No they are perfect!” Aggie said, jumping up, “Only none of my bras will fit and I’ll be reduced to wearing only my stretchiest sweaters in the meantime. What do you think the boys will do? Do you think Harlon Piercewick will notice ?”

Olivia found herself a bit envious. Before all the breast augmentation spell casting she had had at least a double cup size on her sisters.

Now she looked, well certainly not flat chested by any means, but smaller than the other two. Nevertheless she resisted a temptation to move her own tatas up another cup size.

Out of all three triplets, she was the most patient, composed and sensible one. Magic was glorious (and she was good at it), but could also be seductive and addictive, and SOMEONE had to keep her wits about her!
