The characters were phenomenal! I loved following Adam and Rose's beautiful love story. My heart and soul swelled up full of joy as I read their story.

The story-line was unforgettable! Sloat is a master at bringing to life her story-lines and this one is no different. I am happy, yet sad that this is the final story in The Librarian Chronicles, but I truly enjoyed reading this amazing story. It did tug at my heartstrings and made me cry and a piece of my heart will forever be within the pages of this book. I highly recommend this read!

Welcome back to week 3 of this month's Author Spotlight!! This week, we are sharing an excerpt of The Bibliophile by Christy Sloat!! So without further adieu, let's get started....

EXCERPT:

Digging inside the box I found the jewelry box that contained her brooch. She wore the thing everywhere she went. Always on her scarves or her lapel. She always had it on her. I remember as a young child touching its red rubies and thinking that it was the most beautiful thing ever. 

I opened the box and there it sat in its red ruby glory, just like when she was alive. So the Bailey family owned a business, huh? This was news to me. My father never mentioned the family and when we had the funeral, he insisted it just be a small gathering; just us. We didn’t hold a memorial for family, and to me that always seemed so messed up. How had they felt about that?

I picked up the scroll that read “one” and untied it. Inside it held a ton of papers with names and addresses as well as numbers to reach guides, whatever that meant. Circled was Angela’s number. I remember meeting her once or twice when I was older. From what I understood, Dad hated Angela and didn’t want her around Mom. So, she saw her in secret. I never cared; I wanted Mom happy and Angela made her happy. In red letters it said: When in doubt call Angela. 

I set the scroll down just as confused as I was when I first unrolled it and I picked up a book that grabbed my attention instantly. The aged cover had me believe it was a first edition, as well as the wear and tear. Someone loved this book so much that they destroyed it. The spine felt cracked as I ran my thumb over it.  The store had a few first editions and they sold for a pretty penny, so I kept them locked up. One never took too many precautions in life.  

The book I held had no title, which was very intriguing. I rated books like I rated women. The average male liked a girl who had a lot going on on the outside; nice hair, great lips, tan skin, big chest, and so on. But me, I chose women who were a blank canvas. I couldn’t wait to see what they were like on the inside, almost like opening a package. At times, it was the way a girl smiled, or how she tucked her hair back, or laughed nervously. It was easy to find a beautiful girl in New York, and sure, I’ve brought a few home to play with. But the minute, and I mean the absolute minute most of these beautiful women opened their mouths, I was not attracted for long. 

 The same went for books. A cover with too much flare turned me off. This book was going to be perfect. My hands got sweaty at the thought of opening it. 

Chewing my lip, I cracked the book open, and before I knew it, my mind was blown.

No truer words have ever been spoken and this was on amazing adventure that I will not forget anytime soon!!

The characters were remarkable. The story between Eoin and Savannah was breathtakingly beautiful. I felt a real connection with these two characters and the feelers in this story......Gosh....had me thinking and feeling as if I was part of the story. The magic of their relationship just floated from the pages.

The story-line was phenomenal. Sloat does a fantastic job at reeling in her readers from the beginning and her attention to detail makes us feel as if we are in the story with the characters. This story was adventurous and romantic and I loved how the story turned out at the end. Pure genius and magical. I was completely enchanted by Savannah's journey into the realm of being a Librarian. I highly recommend this read!!

FYI. You can read these books as a stand alone. Different characters and different adventures in each book.

When I first met Jessa at my grandma’s funeral I hated her. Upon my first impression, I walked away thinking she was pretentious and rude. She wore a pink dress to a funeral. I mean who does that?

Then when I found out she was going to be my protector, I hated her even more. Jessa’s parents were high society and they were involved with my family in dealings with historical artifacts. They didn’t know my ancestors traveled through time, but they knew we were important historians and that we preserved facts. My grandma thought Jessa would be a good match to help me. I thought that she was senile and wrong and that it wasn’t going to work out, but I was wrong. We learned to like each other and then we became best friends. Turns out my grandma was right.

Jessa was my guide and I need more than just her friendship. While I travel through time she watches over me, keeping me safe. Jessa is also responsible for making sure my clothing is appropriate for the time frame, while also assisting me while I chronical what I have seen and what experiences I’ve gone through. She keeps notes on all of these things in her guide book, which basically makes her invaluable to me and to the work that I do. In order to travel through time you must have a guide you can trust, and I trust Jessa with my life.

The most important research was kept inside the blank pages of a book. Each mission yielded a new book. Once that book was full and our mission complete, it was sealed. I’m a librarian but not in the typical sense. I haven’t earned the proper diploma to get such a title. I, along with many others throughout the world, preserve the history of some of the most famous historical figures inside the blank pages of each book we are sent. The Librarians was founded by a famous scientist, Harold Lockhart. Lockhart wrote the formula for time travel in the only thing he had near him when it was fresh in his brain. That book wasn’t empty, it happened to be the history of none other than, Abraham Lincoln. After he wrote the formula, he was whisked away in time and came face to face with Lincoln himself. The talent to travel and record history was never his intention, but after he realized how wrong historians were about the president, he created the group of librarians. Lockhart put us in charge of libraries and their books. The sect of librarians were given their jobs and they went to work straight away.

I myself hope to achieve the goal of working in a library with the official title someday, which is what I’m studying in school. My intention is to host my own library and help archive important time periods through my research as well as artifacts, like my grandma did. Like all the women did who came before her.

All I know about my job before I travel is who I’m to research. Everything else is learned while I’m inside the book, or in other words, the past.

I’m forbidden to change history by becoming involved in the past or with my target. But I can become friendly with them and immerse myself in their world. It’s hard not to become part of it. While I’m there I am more than just a girl recording the true history. I become my character fully and truly; as if I really am who I say I am. I’ve been many different people, travelling five separate times into five people’s world. And each time I go, I’m nervous. It doesn’t take long to fill the pages the Historical Society of Libraries sends me. I’m currently one of the youngest on the East Coast. My job is taken extremely serious for I have wanted to do this for a long time. Now that it’s my job, I feel as if I am living the dream.

How could I not love it? I am a college student full time and on my off days I travel to the past. What is there not to like?

Excerpt:

I woke in the middle of the night hearing screams fill the air. This was not uncommon at all, but tonight I wasn’t expecting it. Normally when Adele’s meds are changed, she wakes screaming that she can’t sleep. Adele’s room is across from mine. She is roughly in her twenties and I never learned how she ended up here. I try not to talk to the other patients. I don’t know why it is, but I don’t fit in with these people. To them I’m the murderer and they tend to think less of me. That’s fine. I am what they say I am. That’s why I’m here, right?

They told me I stabbed my boyfriend, Phillip, but I don’t remember doing it. I actually don’t remember Phillip at all. No recollection of having been in a relationship either. I must have killed him or else I wouldn’t be in Spindle Ridge.

Dr. Altman says that I have to believe that I did it or we will never get anywhere. I’ll admit it’s hard to believe that these hands could stab a person twenty times. No matter how I imagined it, it is always hard to believe. 

I sat up listening hard for the screams. When they came again I noticed they were not female, they were male. The screams were deeper and reached a longer distance than Adele’s cries ever could. I wondered if the whole building could hear him.

I pulled my covers up over my neck and covered my face. I just wanted to sleep and fall back into the dream I was having. It was beautiful, and if I had my way, I would stay there forever.

Wait!

I sat up fast. Closing my eyes, I tried to remember the dream to the last second. It wasn’t the same dream as the one’s prior. This dream was different! This dream was me and a boy.

I never dreamt of anyone but my parents and the evil woman. The dream’s soft lullaby came back to me as I remembered where I was.

The smell of fresh grass came across my senses.

The sky so blue as I lay on a blanket. I rolled over and saw the face of a boy. He was everything that Spindle Ridge wasn’t; he was beautiful. He had long, shaggy, but not unruly, hair that touched his collar. When he smiled at me, he looked like a boy in love. In love with me.

“Get up you lazy sack!”

I opened my eyes and was pulled back into the now. I was forced to leave the dream behind as I was being pulled out of bed by two nurses.

Not all princesses get their happily ever after... 

WOW...I am really quite speechless about this book and blown away at the same time...

What an amazing twist on an old fairy-tale. This book is nothing like the original Sleeping Beauty, this is Sleeping Beauty meets Grimm. It's fast paced and extremely addicting with its dark, twisted, and phenomenally well written words that just jump out at you and pull you in from the first page. It's an overall spectacular read and one I will read over and over again.

I love how the author pulls you in at the beginning and throws you for a slight tailspin and roller-coaster ride. Rory is a phenomenal character. She is naive yet strong willed. I love how her grows throughout the story. The plot itself is mystical and magical all at the same time, which brings forth the darkness in this story. I love how the spun this story in her own fashion and made me fall in love with the story. This is by far an incredible twist that will be known of forever. I am really excited to read the next installment in this Duology.
